Baby on the way!

So with 3 weeks to go until my due date the question I am asked most often these days is – will I be taking time off when the baby arrives? And it is a good question! The short answer is that I will be slowing down but that I will still be working. How much will depend on the kind of baby I have. If he’s challenging or colicky then I may not be as available as I’d like – but if he’s relatively easy and sleeps alot then I’ll have a bit more time on my hands. I guess you could say my plan is to play it by ear – if you can call that a plan!

For those of you whom I am already working with and for those that are interested in working with me – here is what I promise:

  1. I will check and respond to emails, I just might not be as quick as I usually.
  2. I will make appointments for wedding invitations consultations if the wedding is within the next 6 months – If the wedding isn’t until next Summer/Fall I would prefer to wait to meet until early in 2012 when I am back to work on a more full time basis.
  3. I will take on small corporate projects – so if this is something you are interested in – contact me and we can discuss your needs and I will let you know if I have the time to complete the project.
  4. The quality of my work will not be compromised.
  5. I will be forthcoming about my availabilty and about timelines.

What I’ve come to realised as I approach my due date is that Laura K Design is my first baby and because I love what I do – the health and vitality of it is just as important to me as my boys. I will let you all know when the new addition arrives so stay tuned…. :)

I thought I would end by sharing some photos we had taken recently by the very talented Laura Jane. Enjoy.

Cynthia Martyn Events – Leslieville

The latest stop on my tour of the wedding businesses in Leslieville and Riverside brought me to the studio of Cynthia Martyn Events. The space is also home to a bridal gown boutique called Sash and Bustle which Cynthia opened 2 years ago. I decided to keep these as 2 separate posts so today I will be starting with the event business.

I first met Cynthia many years ago and we actually started our businesses the same year -  2004. She had previously been working at a large bank in Toronto doing corporate events and needed a change. At the time there were not many wedding planners and she feels that much of her original success is because “It was just the right time”. That may have been the reason in the beginning but without being good at what she does she wouldn’t still be successful almost 8 years later.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Cynthia on several photo shoots and weddings and I have to say she is one of the calmest, most easy going people I’ve ever met. (And I’m not the only one who thinks this – clients and vendors feel the same way) She makes everything look effortless, when in reality I know her job is full of obstacles and stress. The reality is she is amazing at staying calm in stressful situations which in turn keeps the bride, groom (and anyone else at the wedding) from being stressed out! Honestly I think her personality is one of the biggest reasons for her success. You mix that with her organizational skills and talent for designing fabulous events and you have a winning combination.

Cynthia has really developed her own style over the years and loves to create
“the whole package” for clients – that being wedding design and planning. Due to the high demand for each event and the scale, Cynthia takes on about 12-15 weddings per year. This way she has the time to give each client the attention they need and deserve.

Her events are spectacular for so many reasons and I would recommend her whole heartily to anyone getting married!

Sébastien’s 4th Birthday

About 3 weeks ago we threw a 4th birthday party for our son Sébastien. We decided to do a small affair in our backyard with just a few of his close friends. We had perfect weather, 6 kids and a few parents. This was so much more manageable than the kids parties we’ve thrown in the past – having all the kids the same age really helps!

I contacted Maria from Little Party Goers for some ideas on activities that would work for 4 year olds and she gave me some great suggestions! We had a water balloon race, a water balloon toss and each child made a t-shirt with fabric paint and sponges in different shapes. I was going to do musical chairs and dance freeze but we ran out of time!

Patricia of Patricia Cakes created a fantastic cake and cupcakes that matched the design from the invitations. Not only did they look fantastic but tasted amazing! Everyone was impressed.

Here are a few photos of the invitations I created, the cake and of course the kids!

Flower Delivery

Today I received a very special delivery from a client – a gorgeous flower arrangement and a lovely thank you note! I recently worked with Shannon Jukes of Curly Girl Flowers to create a promotional piece for her new business. I also helped give her some insight into the wedding industry as well as some great contacts. I wish you  loads of success and looking forward to seeing you at the Wedluxe Show Wedding show on January 8th, 2012 Shannon! Thanks again for the flowers.

Ballet Black Photo Shoot – as seen on Wedluxe.com

Several months ago I had the pleasure of working with a very talented group of people on a creative photo shoot inspired by the movie Black Swan. Earlier this week some of the photos were featured on the Wedluxe Magazine website. This shoot was all about drama and bold colours – a perfect fit for me! I created the invitations, reply cards, menus, personalized place cards and table numbers.

Wild Thyme in Leslieville

Shortly after I contacted Margaret from Wild Thyme about doing a blog post on her business, I realised that she was – to my knowledge – the first wedding vendor in this neighbourhood. I was living and working out of a loft on Carlaw Ave 7 years ago when I first walked into her store on Queen street east. We hit it off right from the beginning and was thrilled to have someone local I could chat with about business!

Wild Thyme began 10 years ago in a high end grocery store called Shay Gourmet before moving to Leslieville at the end of 2002. At the time the area was really starting to develop but was a far cry from what it is today! She has since moved away from her retail storefront to an old industrial building at 388 Carlaw Avenue.

In the past 10 years, Margaret has created everything from center pieces, bouquets, boutonniere and floral decor for over 250 weddings. To say she knows weddings would be an understatement! She loves to support the local growers in Ontario and tries to use flowers in season whenever possible. Her style is modern but still with a classic feel. Nothing is overdone or too stark – just beautiful.

In my conversation with Margaret she expressed a need for change and after much deliberation has decided to make the move into wedding planning. With her extensive background in florals and experience with weddings and decor it felt like a natural transition. She is getting her WPIC certification in the coming months and will be launching her new business venture in time for the start of the 2012 wedding season.
Good luck Margaret – I’m cheering for you!

In the meantime you can still get gorgeous floral arrangements for your wedding or special event by calling 416.440.2614 or emailing flowers@wildthyme.ca

Surprise Baby Shower for Erin and Andrew

Last fall I designed the invitations and stationery for a spectacular surprise baby shower for good friends of photographer Rebecca Wood. I had so much fun with this – from the colours – to the design where I incorporating both a tree and 3 birds (mama, papa and baby). As well as the invitations, I created little food signs for the delicious spread and a large sign where the guests were all able to write their guess for the date the baby would be born – so fun!

I found out that Erin and Andrew had a baby girl named Ruby on January 9th, 2011. Congratuations! Here is a link to some photos of her taken by Rebecca. Portrait: Ruby

Baby Boy Birth Announcement

I had the pleasure of creating a birth announcement for a gorgeous little boy recently and I wanted to share the finished product with you. I designed his sister’s announcement a few years ago and really enjoyed reconnecting with my client (the mom)!

Congratulations Laura and Andrew on your little boy!

Meet Cindy Johnson of Platinum Events Group

The second stop in my tour was with Cindy Johnson at Platinum Events Group, also in Riverside. Cindy and I met for the first time at LPK’s grand opening party in 2008. I still remember chatting with her at that party and thinking to myself – how is it that we just met and I feel like we’ve known each other for years!

Cindy is a powerhouse of a woman – she’s ambitious, hard working and always seems to have something new on the go. Honestly I don’t think I could keep up with her!

Before starting Platinum Events Group (PEG) in 2004, Cindy worked in events at Princess Margaret Hospital. She had requests from friends and family to help plan their weddings and started out with Day of Coordination and the moved into Wedding Planning and eventually full Wedding Design. There were no courses available to teach wedding coordination, planning or design when she started so she taught herself. She told me that there are so many more options available now and in fact she will be teaching “Event Operations” for the event management certificate at Georgian College this fall.

When I asked Cindy to describe how she goes about designing a wedding I have to say I loved her answer. She designs using the 5 senses – Sight, Smell, Hearing, Touch, Taste. I’d never thought of an event that way but it makes total sense – no pun intended! Fashion is also a large driving factor for the style and look of a wedding so more often than not, Cindy uses the brides dress as a starting point when designing.

In the fall of 2009, Cindy launched Platinum Destinations (a Division of Platinum Events Group) and on March 1st, 2011 announced a partnership with Celebrations Ltd., a company based in the Cayman Islands’ that specializes in weddings and events. Offering this collaborative effort to clients helps alleviate many of the challenges when planning a destination wedding. Something else that Cindy mentioned was that they “only recommend properties to which we have personally visited” – makes perfect sense to me! They also now have offices in both Anguilla and Grand Cayman.

In January of this year, Cindy launched Coordinating Details, a company that specializes in day of coordination. She felt that this was something most people wanted or needed and in her own words “just because you don’t have a large budget doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have access to the best vendors.” Coordinating details offers basic packages to keep their prices low.

Cindy has 2 talented wedding coordinators that work with her to produce all of the fabulous weddings and events that Platinum Events, Platinum Destinations and Coordinating Details are a part of. So if you’re looking for someone with a clear passion for weddings and design – look no further!

Platinum Events Group is located at 9 Davis Street, unit 300 in Toronto.

Monogram and Damask Invitation

This is a new invitation I created recently that combines my monogram and damask designs. The black and grey look super sharp on the white linen paper – I’m really happy with how these turned out!
